THE recent applause of the emergence of the All Progressives Congress
(APC) by former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida, is said
to be causing ripples in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Findings by Saturday Tribune revealed that the national leadership of
the PDP is not comfortable with the comments credited to Babangida at
his Minna, Niger State home on Thursday, while speaking with
journalists.
According to media reports, the former military president expressed
joy over the emergence of the APC, saying that it was good for the
political development of the country.
Babangida was reported to have claimed that his position on the
desirability of a two-party system in the country when he was in the
saddle, which led to the formation of the Social Democratic Party (SDP)
and the National Republican Convention (NRC), had been justified.
It was reported that when asked whether the development would not
pose a problem for his party (PDP), Babangida retorted: “PDP or my
party? Which one is my party? PDP was my party,” and was said to have
Although the menacing issue of kidnapping is not peculiar to
Delta State, there appears to be confusion especially between the members
of the Delta State House of Assembly, who are constitutionally
empowered to make laws for peace and good governance; and the State
executive governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan.
Presently,
the two arms of government are engulfed in cold war on how to address
the issue permanently. While the 29-member State House of Assembly, on
one hand, voted for outright death penalty for anybody caught in the act
of kidnapping to act as deterrent; the governor, a medical doctor by
training is vehemently opposed to it.
It is no longer news that
DeltaState had witnessed series of high profile kidnapping ranging from
kidnapping of commissioners, lawmakers, judges, mother of the Minister
of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and even a 70 year-old cousin of
Governor Uduaghan. Gov Uduaghan Ironically, the 70 year old cousin of

Less than five years after
Nigeria-only gay church, House of Rainbow, was attacked by some Lagos
residents and consequently closed down in Nigeria, the church has
returned to the country with three secret groups in the African most
populous nation.
With this development, Nigeria appears to lead other countries where the church currently operates.
Founded
by Nigerian-born gay, Rev. Rowland Jide Macaulay, House of Rainbow,
which came to Nigeria in 2006, is “an inclusive and affirming religious
community open and welcome to all people including sexual minorities and
marginalised people, a monthly gathering of ‘people of faith’ for
‘prayer and praise’, which focuses on the person’s journey towards
reconciliation of sexuality and spirituality.”
Macaulay, a trained
lawyer and son of a reverend who owns a massive church in Lagos, is
leading the comeback even though he remains in self-imposed exile in
London, where sources said he currently enjoys lots of financial
sponsorship for the movement.
Unlike in the pre-2008 when the
church openly operated at Jakande Estate, Isolo, and Berger in Lagos,
The research gives a new insight into the way mothers communicate with their babies - and how language skills develop
Brain scans reveal babies born THREE MONTHS early can recognise human
speech - and even distinguish between male and female voices. Babies born up to three months premature can recognise different syllables in human speech, say scientists. A
study showed similarities in the way the brain processes language in
the new-borns and adults - including specific neurological reactions to
changes from the 'ba' to 'ga' sound and to a male to female voices. Professor
Fabrice Wallois, of Picardie University in Amiens, France, said the
findings suggest that early in the development of the brain it begins to
decipher distinct sounds or 'phonemes'. He said as early as three months before birth a baby's brain establishes neural functions that help decipher human speech. At
birth children can discriminate some syllables and recognise human
speech but how these immature brain cells process it remains unclear. Using
powerful non-invasive scanners Prof Wallois and colleagues analysed 12

Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Ahmed Gulak
A presidential aide on Friday said President Goodluck Jonathan was not afraid to visit any part of the country contrary to insinuations in some quarters. Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Ahmed Gulak, stated this in an exclusive interview with our correspondent. Gulak was reacting to Thursday’s visit of governors of the parties in the newly formed All Progressives Congress to Maiduguri, Borno State, where insinuations were made that leaders should be courageous to visit any part of the country. Borno State has remained the centre of activities of the fundamental Islamic sect, Boko Haram. Jonathan has not visited the state since the insurgency, which has claimed several lives, began in 2009. Vice-President Namadi Sambo was there recently. The governors said they chose Maiduguri to prove a point that “there should not be a no-go area for any
The European Union has given the green light for the
sale of a medication that will help quench the urge for alcoholics to
drink, the companies behind the new treatment said Thursday.
Selincro, developed by Finland's Biotie Therapies, reduces "alcohol
consumption by approximately 60 percent" or about a bottle of wine a day
after six months, Danish drugmaker Lundbeck said.
With the go-ahead from the European Commission, Lundbeck, which will
manufacture the medication, said it expects to launch Selincro by the
middle of this year.
Selincro is mainly aimed at reducing alcohol dependence in adults who
drink heavily -- consuming up to six drinks a day -- but who do not
suffer from withdrawal symptoms or need detoxification.
"Selincro is thought to reduce the reinforcing effects of alcohol,
and thereby reduces the urge to drink
Holly Madison, former Playboy bunny says she wants to eat her placenta after her first child is born. Holly is due in March.
And her reason for doing that is she hopes the pills will help her recover after childbirth.
“This might sound gross, but I’m totally planning on having my placenta

“I heard it helps women recover faster and I want to recover as quickly as I can!”
As strange as it sounds, it turns out Holly isn’t the first Hollywood mom to try this.
In Sept. 2011, January Jones revealed she consumed her placenta in pills after she gave birth to her son.

The pilot told how he had three room changes in two days during a London stop-over because of problems with air-conditioning.
He said the lack of sleep, combined with only having a one-night stop

school.
The student who is in E2, earlier had a bet with some
guys in his lecture hall that he could wear a wrapper to school and the
guys promised to give him #20,000 if he did. Guess what? The dude took
the risk but lo and behold, after he stepped into his hall, the gals who
could not hide their amusement started shouting, yelling and chanting.
The
noise eventually attracted the security officers to the Hall and the
boy was fished out & planked with heavy logs of wood. These action

Students and staff of Lagos State University, LASU, have kept off from the campus following the brutal murder of a rising hip-hop artiste, Olaniyan Damilola, popularly known as Damino Damoche, at the school gate, Thursday afternoon.
Pandemonium and confusion reigned supreme yesterday after the killing of Damoche as students and others who have anything to do in the school hurriedly left the campus for fear of being hit by assailants’ bullets or being arrested by the police.
When Vanguard visited the campus today (Friday), what used to be a beehive of activities with human traffic was scanty and a shadow of itself. Meanwhile, the school management and the students union have reacted to the murder of the student.

Abuja High Court on Friday dismissed a suit that sought to bar
President Goodluck Jonathan from contesting the 2015 presidential
election.
It will be recalled that Chief Cyriachus Njoko, a member of the PDP, filed the suit in March 2012.
Delivering the judgment, Justice Mudashiru Oniyangi held that Jonathan had not yet served two terms as substantive president.
"The first defendant [Jonathan] neither contested the office of the president before 2011 nor got nomination of his party to contest same election before 2011.
"Jonathan, to my knowledge, in 2007 contested the general election as a vice president and nothing more.
"Section
135 (2) of the 1999 constitution spells out the tenure of the President
to be four years single term, while Section137 (1b) prescribes that the
President can only be administered with Oath of office and Oath of
allegiance twice.
"In the case of Jonathan, his mere assumption of
the office of the President was necessitated by what the National
Assembly described as doctrine of necessity because of the demise of
late President Umar

VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Catholic Church awoke Friday with no leader following the resignation of Benedict XVI, who pledged obedience to his successor and described himself as "simply a pilgrim" starting the final journey of his life.
Now begins a period known as the "sede vacante" or "vacant see" — the
transition between the end of one papacy and the start of another.
During this limited time, several key players take charge of running the Holy See, guiding the College of Cardinals in their deliberations and organizing the conclave of cardinals whose votes elect Benedict's successor.
With the 8 p.m. Thursday end of Benedict's papacy, every department head in the Vatican lost his job — except for those whose offices are considered crucial for the smooth running of the transition period.
On Monday, the cardinals begin meetings to set the conclave date and discuss problems facing the Catholic
EASTLEIGH, United Kingdom (AFP) – British Prime Minister David Cameron was under pressure Friday after his Conservatives were beaten into third place in a key election by his scandal-hit coalition partners and a eurosceptic party. Cameron admitted it was a “disappointing” night for his party after the Liberal Democrats held the parliamentary seat of Eastleigh in southern England in a contest billed as the most important British by-election in a generation. The Conservatives had hoped at least to come in second but they were condemned to third place by the anti-European Union and anti-immigration UK Independence Party, which registered its best ever performance. The vote was sparked by the resignation of disgraced former energy minister Chris Huhne, a Liberal Democrat who has pleaded guilty to trying to avoid a speeding fine. Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, whose own position as Lib Dem leader had been on the line after a collapse in the party’s poll ratings, said the “stunning victory” showed they “can be a party of government

Her ground for dissolution: her husband has been an untamed chatterbox.
Adunni told the court that her husband,Garba Ajani not only talked too much, but also did not keep family secrets.
“My
husband is fond of sharing our family affairs with his relatives and

She said: “My husband has no trust in me, instead he shares his problems with friends and relatives who will mislead him.”
The plaintiff informed the court that the marriage was contracted in 2006 and had produced two children.
“I am tired of him because I have tried my best to change him and he is not ready to cooperate,” she said.
