A teacher at Methodist Nursery and Primary School, Abeokuta, Ogun State, unhappy with conditions in which her pupils studied, made a difference using her own resources.
Opeogun Folake Ayoade spent almost N400,000 of her own funds to renovate the classroom, The Sun reports. According to the teacher, who cares about the future of each pupil of hers, she made such a move to complement the Nigerian government’s efforts at providing education for the citizenry.
Apart from having renovated the classroom holding 30 pupils, Ayoade re-plastered the floor, repainted the wall and decorated them with the images suitable for the children, bought TV, DVD player, picture charts and also got the fan to provide maximally comfortable environment.
Impressed by Ayoade’s commitment, the Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) wrote her a letter of commendation urging other teachers worldwide to emulate her gesture.

Meanwhile the humble lady, explained why she decided to change the situation:
"As a teacher, I strongly believe that responsibilities of providing qualitative education to all
Nigerians in all tiers should not be left to the governments alone. When I was posted to this class few years ago, I decided to take the bull by the horn and joined hands with our state government not only to ensure conducive environment for my pupils, but also provide teaching aids which I believe will enhance their learning."
Expressing her gratitude to her mother, the woman narrated that she had lost her father at an early age and was brought up by her mother, who did everything possible to educate the children.
She also revealed that it took time for the nursery teacher to complete all she had planned to do. According to the woman, her colleagues did not show much enthusiasm about her actions:
"When I started this in December 2012, many of my colleagues were wondering what had come over me, but I thank my husband for his encouragement."
The heroic teacher also made known that she had "summoned up courage with my meagre salary" for the sake of the children.
The grateful parents could not but appreciate more her impact, as one of them identified as Adisa Kehinde was quoted saying:
"She relates well with her pupils so much that they are always eager to be in school. As parents, we are appreciative of what she did and we will continue praying for her to succeed in life."
This is the story of a wonderful teacher from Ogun who showed by her own experience that ONE person can make a difference.
