A 43-year-old mechanic, Obi Orji, has reportedly committed suicide over his inability to pay his house rent.
The incident occurred yesterday in Minna, Niger State,  after the deceased had received a threat of eviction from his landlord.
According to witnesses, Obi, a resident at Kateren Gwari, Minna, committed suicide by drinking a poisonous chemical in the early hours of Sunday, after his wife and five children had left for Church.
It was learnt that he had been unable to meet his obligation of paying his N35,000 annual rent, following the expiration of the date which his landlord gave him to pay up.
A colleague of the deceased at Mechanic Bye Pass, Minna, said Obi’s landlord, simply identified as Alhaji Lateef, had constantly traced him to his workshop at the Mechanic bye-pass in Minna, threatening to forcefully evict him out of the house if he failed to pay his rent at the appointed date.
As at the time of this report, the body of the deceased had been deposited in the mortuary, with an attendant
confirming the incident. Further enquires could not be made from the hospital management following the ongoing strike by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).
