Following the popularity and widespread impact of the ALS ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’, Ivorians have followed suit by launching a campaign ‘Lather against Ebola’ challenge to raise awareness about the Ebola virus disease.
According to the originators, the campaign is to motivate the African population to adopt better hygienic practices to combat the spread of Ebola.
The ‘Soap Bucket Challenge’ campaign was spearheaded by Edith Brou, a prominent Twitter user in Ivory Coast, who said the campaign would be a good idea to tropicalise the ice bucket trend.
Those who partake in the “Soap bucket challenge” are expected to douse themselves with soapy water and hand out three bottles of hand sanitizer. Instead of donating cash, people are expected to donate bars of soap and bottles of antiseptic.
Ivory Coast has not reported any Ebola case yet, however the country has shut its borders with Liberia and
Guinea, where the majority of deaths have occurred,  and banned people from the affected areas from entering the country.
At least 2,622 people have died in the worst outbreak of Ebola virus in history, which has so far infected at least 5,335 people in West Africa, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Thursday, 18 September.
