Bayelsa: Why Hoodlums Hacked Female Corps Member's Hand
The suspected hoodlums who attacked a young female corps member, Folakemi Akinbode, and had her hand severed off with a machete, have been captured by the Police.
Upon interrogation, the two suspects have confessed that they assaulted the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member posted to the Obuah community in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, demandig money. Upon her refusal to hand in the unspecified amount of money, they hacked off her hand.
The culprits have been identified as Ebi Jatto and Weriye Aluwa. They were arrested on Wednesday, August 7, 2013, at the Koroama Community in Yenagoa Local Government Area of the State. The arrest was made as they tried to sell the mobile phone which belonged to the 26-year-old victim.
According to source inside the Police force, the suspects have already confessed to committing the crime.
Akinbode hails from Ondo State, and is a Batch A Corps member serving in the Obuah community in
Yenagoa local government area of Bayelsa State. The young woman is the alumna of Nursing from the Madonna University, Elele in Rivers State.
On Monday, August 5, 2013, the young woman was on her way to the Corpers' Lodge near the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital, Okolobori, when, at around 8.30 pm she was attacked.
As the Police source disclosed, she had been in charge of a large amount of money used by the Hospital to pay blood donors at the Blood Bank section of the Hospital. The two attackers were reportedly present as the Youth Corps member made the payments.
"They claimed that all they wanted from her was the remaining money she kept in her bag after making payments," the source says, narrating further that she managed to offer resistance and, moreover, identified one of the hoodlums. That was when the attacked her with machete.
The swift arrest followed the emergency youth meeting of Youth Vigilante Association set up to investigate and apprehend those involved in the attack, Paramount Ruler of the Community, the Ibolou XI of Obunagha, H.R.H Godsgive Apoh, said, confirmig the capture of the culprits,
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr.Alex Akhigbe, also confirmed the arrest and said that they were yet to establish the motive behind the attack.
The young woman is now receiving treatment at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital, Okolobiri,
