A source inside the church who spoke on the phone around 14:00, say members of the church have remained locked down in the church premises for about three (3) hours now as policemen battle with agents of Boko Haram at the entrance gate.
The source, a lady, say the Boko Haram agents are:
Wielding daggers and other dangerous weapons and that they have created bonfires on the major road and at the entrance gate to the church. As at the time she spoke with KD Blog, she said it is a situation of "no
going in, no coming out."
KD Blog contacted a top security personnel in Abuja who confirmed the unfortunate development. He however added that Army personnel who were guarding other churches in the axis have been instructed to move to St Mary Catholic church immediately.
This is a developing story. More details coming......
UPDATES 3.45 pm: Here's what really happened: KD BLOG called a friend who resides at karu he logically explained what happened: that a soldierman demanded 'apalapala' (probably a bribe) from an okada man which he refused to give him and on the process shot the okadaman on his leg and this led to protests among his fellow okada riders close to the Catholic church who went to bring their fellow muslim brothers and bikemen. In other to avoid a Spill over, It was gathered that the soldiers that were deployed to the area to support those on ground have succeeded in making way for the church members held captive inside the nearby church premises to go home.
UPDATES 7.45 pm: A joint effort by the Nigerian army and police earlier today prevented the attempted burning of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nyanya area of the federal capital territory in Abuja .
Sources at the church told KD BLOG that trouble started when a Hausa-speaking Muslim man in the area was prevented from parking his car too close to the church building. The measure was put in place as a way of preventing Islamist militants from attacking Christian places of worship on Sundays.
The man, however, resisted the police and soldiers guarding the church. An argument ensued leading to his arrest and humiliation by the security agents who told him to “frog-jump” in front of the church.
After his release by the police, the man reportedly went into the community to mobilize some people to attack the church and burn it down.
Panicked church members left the church leaving their cars behind.
However, a swift intervention by police and soldiers prevented the man and his mob from burning the church. The security agents then started shooting in the area leading more residents to flee the immediate vicinity of the crisis.
