A woman who thought she might never be able to have children
is now pregnant with twins. Vali, from Brisbane, Australia, had both
ovaries removed seven years ago as part of a cancer treatment.
Just before the surgery, she asked doctors to preserve some of her ovarian tissue.
In
2010, doctors grafted some of the tissue to her abdominal wall. They
performed a second graft in 2012. She was able to produce two eggs,
which were then fertilized and placed back inside her uterus.
She and her partner, Dean, are now expecting two girls.
Doctors
say this is a huge breakthrough that gives hope to many other cancer
survivors who thought they
could never have children.
