But for the dogged determination of Tottenham Hotspur’s defender, Jan Vertonghen, Aston Villa’s Nicklas Helenius would have made history as the first player to score in his underwear.
As the Villa striker raced into the penalty area, Vertonghen took drastic action and grabbed Helenius’ shorts. The Danish striker soon found himself with his white shorts around his knees, and the ball still at his feet.
The drama happened during Villa’s League Cup 4 – 0 loss on Tuesday night in a match played at Villa Park in Birmingham, West Midlands. See more photos below:
