DEFECTION: Senate Distances Itself From Enang's Declarations
The Upper Chamber of the National Assembly has distanced itself from a recent statement credited to Senator Ita Enang that the Senate would declare the seats of any defecting Senator from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) vacant.
Senate Spokesman, Enyinnaya Abaribe, in a statement in Abuja yesterday, refuted reports that appeared to be aligning the Senate President, David Mark with Senator Enang’s assertion.
The statement, Senator Abaribe further said, has nothing to do with Mark who had claimed that the leadership of the PDP would work to keep the party intact and prevent further crisis in the party.
Abaribe said,
"In the first place, there is no acrimony in the Senate irrespective of political party affiliation. The Senate is still on vacation and will resume on January 14 and it is only after its deliberations that any statement on urgent matters of state would be issued. It is therefore preposterous to attribute the personal opinion of a Senator to represent the resolution of the Senate and its highly respected
leadership as exemplified by Senate president, Mark. The Senate’s position as statutory is always relayed by its spokesman. In which case, it becomes safe to say that the Senate has spoken."
According to Abaribe, the Senate is at peace and there is no sign that the senators are working at cross purposes.”
