Officers of the Abuja Police Command on Thursday, arraigned a
38-year-old applicant, Augustine Tochukwu, before an FCT High Court for
allegedly abducting and raping a house-wife.
The
accused, who hails from Umudioka Awka, Anambra State, is standing a
four-count charge of conspiracy, armed robbery, kidnap and rape before
Justice Husseini Baba-Yusuf.
Corporal John Ijagbemi, the
prosecutor, told the court that Tochukwu kidnapped the woman on January
18, 2013, and later phoned her husband, Nzota Chidi, asking him for 40
million naira as ransom to secure the release of his wife or lose her
forever.
The prosecutor said when the victim was in the accused custody, he raped her.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Justice Baba-Yusuf, in his ruling granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000 with two reliable sureties in like sum.
He
directed the sureties to provide title deeds of landed property within
the FCT, adding that if the accused
fails to meet the bail conditions,
he would be remanded to Kuje Medium Security Prison.
The judge then adjourned the case to October 13, for trial to commence.
