FLASHBACK: This Nigerian boxer was beaten to death in 1953


On Saturday, 4 March 1952, a high-flying Nigerian Middleweight boxer known as BLACKIE POWER attempted to win the Nigerian Midleweight Title Belt from Tommy West. Before that match, he had lost to Dick Tiger by an unanimous decision of the judges in a fight which took place at Glover Memorial Hall, on January 30, 1953.
In the fight against Tommy West, Blackie Power seemed powerless against the firepower of Tommy West. he was knocked out in the second round. He never regained consciousness and was rushed to the hospital
where he died.
He is the FIRST West African boxer to die in the boxing ring.
