A Catholic priest in Borno has lamented that residents of the state, and walking corpses, who live under an hovering cloud of fear, tension and uncertainty.
The Vice Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria, Borno State, Rev. Fr. John Bakeni, said that Nigerians living in troubled areas like Borno State have been living in fear in recent time, since the attacks of the Boko Haram insurgents got more brazen and deadlier.
Bakeni made the statement on Tuesday, 9 September in a telephone conversation with TELL.
The priest stated that over 2000 widows and more than 300 orphans have been displaced in recent attacks on towns and villages in the state, while 59 churches have been destroyed.
Bakeni said, “the crowd of fear, tension and uncertainty is now hovering over us. Even when the people are seen going about their business, we are actually working corpses.”
“We are in a state of hopelessness right now. We are still trying to understand what is happening” because “People are traumatised. People are anxious. People are tensed.”
He also attributed the recent brazenness of the terrorists to the inaction of the government and the silence of
the majority, while also alleging that the reality on ground in Borno State is different from what the federal government is telling Nigerians.
