Police officer slumps and dies during examination in Lagos
On Wednesday, 15 October, a police sergeant attached to the Oyo state police command slumped and died during the ongoing promotional examination of policemen to the rank of Sergeant and Inspector, at the Police College, Ikeja, Lagos.
The deceased, who was simply identified as Lekan, had reportedly written the promotional examination with his other colleagues last week, after which successful officers were invited to undergo an assessment exercise with a team of senior Police officers headed by an Assistant Inspector General of Police.
Sergeant Lekan, who was to be promoted to the rank of Inspector, reportedly slumped at about 1 pm, while assembled in a syndicate of 50 on the parade ground, awaiting their turn for assessment.
Members of his syndicate team attempted to revive him, but their efforts were futile, as he instantly gave up the ghost.
A doctor, who subsequently arrived the parade ground, told the police officers that the Sergeant had passed
on. An ambulance from the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH , later arrived the scene and removed the corpse to the mortuary .
Despite the death, the assessment exercise commenced, while it was believed that the deceased came in sick.
A policeman said, “We are from the same command. Lekan was involved in an auto accident back in Oyo state. In fact, he managed to come for the promotional course because he had been sick. He passed the examination that was written last week.”
