Baby Charlie Gard Given US Citizenship Just So He Can Come For Treatment

Charlie Gard has been given US citizenship by Congress to allow him travel to America for experimental treatment.

The 11-month-old boy's parents want to take him to the US for a pioneering therapy, but are barred from taking him out of London's Great Ormond Street Hospital (Gosh), where he is being treated. Connie Yates and Chris Gard have released a new photo showing the terminally-ill child, hooked up to a life support machine in his hospital bed, with his eyes open and a toy being held in front of him.

The couple shared the snap to dispute Gosh doctors' claims that Charlie, who suffers from a rare genetic condition, cannot see. Doctors have said Charlie, whose condition is called mitochondrial depletion, has brain damage and is blind, deaf and unable to move, but his parents say he is not suffering or in any pain. So now he can be moved to the US.
