4 inmates killed, 36 others escape in a jailbreak at Ikot Ekpene prison, Akwa Ibom state
Four prison inmates have been confimed dead while 36 others escaped in a jailbreak that took place at the Ikot Ekpene Prison in Akwa-Ibom state today December 27th.
According to a statement by the Akwa Ibom state prison command, ASP Ogbajie J. Ogbajie, some prison inmates attacked other inmates that were serving in the prison's kitchen. They seized an axe from their fellow inmates, inflicted a deep cut on their head and immediately made for the rear entrance of the prison. They broke the door with the axe and engaged the staff that chased after them in a battle.
At the end of the scuffle, 4 lost their lives while 7 were recaptured. 36 are still at large and search
parties have been activated to effect their recapture.
The Controller of Prisons Akwa Ibom State Command, Alex Oditah has ordered an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident.
The CP wishes to appeal to members of the public to assist the authority with useful intelligence that will aid in the arrest of the prisoners assuring that security has been strengthened in all prison formations in the State to forestall breach of security.
