Gunmen snatch N9.5m from Niger HoS’ chief accountant
Gunmen numbering four attacked the Chief
Accountant in the office of the Head of Service of Niger State in Minna
on Monday and snatched over N9.5m from him.
The incident paralysed economic
activities in the state capital for over two hours as commuters and
motorists took to their heels.
The Chief Accountant, Idris Abdullahi,
was said to be returning from a bank, where he had gone to withdraw the
money around 10.30am.
It was learnt that the money was meant for the overhead of the HoS office.
An eyewitness told our correspondent
that the gunmen blocked the chief accountant’s car when he got to the
gate of the state secretariat complex and started shooting repeatedly
before snatching the money from him and zoomed off.
The gunshots caused panic as people in
the secretariat complex, including the security men and vigilantes,
started running for their lives.
The eyewitness added that the gunmen
drove towards the customs office along the Western bypass, where their
vehicle developed a mechanical fault, forcing them to abandon it; the
hoodlums then hijacked another vehicle and zoomed off to an unknown
destination.
Efforts to get the HoS office to comment on the incident proved abortive as of the time of filing this report.
The state Police Public Relations
Officer, Mohammad Abubakar, however, confirmed the incident, adding that
police personnel were on the trail of the robbers.
“We have dispatched the information to all our units in the command for
our personnel to be on the alert .We are on top of the situation,”
Abubakar said.
