Three siblings drown in Anambra river

Three children of the same parents had drowned in River Niger when the canoe they were travelling in capsized. The victims, whose names were yet to be disclosed, were students of Community Secondary School, Atani, Ogbaru Local Government Area, Anambra State. Their father, who was only identified as Mr Chukwuemeka, lives in Urum-Etiti Anam, Anambra-West Local Government Area. According to a source, the accident happened at Ochuche, a riverine community in the same council area, while they were paddling their canoe back home.

Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Anambra State command, Mr. Edwin Okadigbo, while confirming the incident said that the students were declared missing on March 23. He said preliminary investigation revealed that the incident was caused by river turbulence, following a downpour. “Two out of the five students, who were in the canoe, however, managed to survive. Efforts are being intensified at recovering the bodies of the missing three,” he said.
