This Florida mermaid is determined to swim against the tide.
Eden Sirene, a mermaid from Fishhawk Ranch, Fla., can no longer wear her sparkly blue tail in her town’s pools—thanks to a stringent “no-fin” policy.
Fishhawk Ranch’s community board told the blonde-haired Sirene, known as Jenna Conti on land, that her swimming gear was a potential safety hazard.

“It makes me feel amazing,” Conti said about the tail.

“It makes me feel amazing, makes children smile, makes adults smile, everybody happy,” Conti said. “You don’t expect to see a mermaid at the pool.”
Conti’s dragon skin silicone tail is fitted just for her body. She ordered it from the mermaid-making company MerNation, according to Patch. A custom designed silicone tail from MerNation takes at least three months to make and starts out at $2500.
Conti doesn’t believe the fin is a safety concern.

“This can’t come flinging off in a pool like swim fin, and it’s not made of a hard plastic,” Conti said.
The Florida woman’s fans have rallied to her side after hearing about the board’s decision on Monday.

Conti dreams of becoming one of the Florida Aquarium’s mermaid swimmers.

“I’m a 48-year-old man and I get a big smile on my face seeing her swim,” said neighbor Bob Abruszzese.
The fin is not just meant to entertain—Conti was also using Fishhawk Ranch’s pools to practice. She dreams of working as a mermaid for the Florida Aquarium.
The town board has said that Conti can reserve the pool for special events or shows in the future.
Until then, this little mermaid is determined to keep her head up.
“We just wanted to show some magic here in Fishhawk, that’s all,” she said.
