20 Nigerians Break Into UK's Best Universities From Just One School (Photos)

This school was all over the news last year, and they have done it again this year.

It was all joy and smiles for the 51 A-level students of Brampton Manor Academy in the East Ham area of London who had secured university admissions into the U.K's most prestigious universities known locally as the "Ox-bridge", a portmanteau of the two oldest, classiest and richest universities to study competitive courses. Meanwhile, more than 100 received straight A and A* GCSE grades for a third year running in the same school. Many of these students are from ethnic minority backgrounds, and Nigerians especially seem to stand out. The performance is sterling says executive principal Dr Dayo Olukoshi: "These offers reward the academic brilliance and dedication of our students", he added

Other pupils are heading to Russell Group universities including Warwick, King’s College London, Imperial College, London school of Economics, St Andrews and Durham, taking up places on courses including law, economics and biomedical sciences including medicine. Graduates from these schools hold 61% of all UK jobs that require a university degree, despite being only 17% of all higher education graduates.

Perhaps the most distinguishing factor of the Brampton manor academy is the fact that it is a state run school situated in one of the lesser privileged areas of town, and yet, the school's success bests the admission rates of some of the top-performing private schools across the UK. The school's academic policy is "Getting the students to shake off the idea that Oxford and Cambridge are just for an “elite” couple of students and encourage everyone to apply.’ And that seems to be working very well for the previous couple of years. In 2014, one student received an Oxbridge offer and in 2018, that had grown to 25 - For the current year, the number stands at 51, a record. The school’s success comes after figures revealed that state school pupils have been offered 69 per cent of the undergraduate places at Oxford – a record high.

The school Principal, Mr Dayo Olukoshi who has since taken the institution to heights never attained before joined Brampton Manor as the Principal/headteacher in 2008, having previously worked as a teacher and senior leader in various UK schools since 1992. He has been awarded an OBE (Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) for Services to Education.

The school has the best student performance and highest rank in Newham East London, and has been ranked as one of the 50 best secondary schools in the United Kingdom for the fourth year running.
